Are we in the midst of a LeBron James farewell tour?

In the history of sports, there are certain figures who become the sport itself. For the last 23 years in basketball, that figure has been LeBron James. For many fans of the NBA now, they literally don’t know the league without LeBron James.

Of the countless feats LeBron has pulled off over the course of his career, one specific talent of his continues to ring true as his most impressive: his longevity.

We’ve seen countless players come through and leave their mark on the NBA with outlandish talent. None, however, has been able to sustain that level of play for nearly as long as LeBron James has.

One topic of conversation over the last several seasons has been, just how much longer are we going to see James play? Thanks to an announcement from the league and Topps, we may have gotten a hint that we’re in the midst of a LeBron James farewell tour.

Did Topps just announce a LeBron James farewell tour right under our noses?

Tonight, the Los Angeles Lakers will take on the Sacramento Kings after the last game ended in controversy. With news coming out recently that Dennis Schröder assaulted Luka Doncic after their last game, this one should be fun.

That is not the biggest headline of the night, though.

In a run-of-the-mill tweet, Topps, the trading card company, announced something that turned fans’ heads. They announced that for the rest of the season, LeBron James would be wearing a special edition ’23rd season’ patch on all his jerseys.

The patch will be removed after each game and placed in ultra-rare trading cards. The reason they’re starting tonight is that Sacramento is the city where he began his NBA career. The sentimental value of why and where they’re starting this reeks of a farewell tour.

LeBron is still averaging a mind-boggling 21.9 PPG, 6.9 APG, and 5.6 RPG at age 41. It just doesn’t make sense.

Most believe that due to James’ inclination to enjoy the spotlight, we would get a good warning leading into his last season. With this news, though, could we be seeing the final season of LeBron James? If this is it, what a ride it’s been.
