JJ Redick blames “human element” for Lakers struggles. Is it true?
The Lakers are in their worst stretch of the 2025-2026 season. After falling to the Cavaliers on the road, they were just 5-5 in their last ten games.
Fans and media are scurrying to find reasons for these struggles. But head coach JJ Redick has his own take.
The Human Element Affecting the Lakers
In his post-game presser following the loss to the Clippers, JJ Redick said the “human element” of players worrying about their futures is weighing the team down.
Redick went on to explain that when you have a team full of pending free agents and player options, “trust” is hard to build.
Underlying Message Sent
It seems that this quote could be a message to certain people. For one, this could be a shot at the front office—specifically, Rob Pelinka.
Pelinka has made it clear that the Lakers want to avoid taking on any contracts that spill into the 2027 season. This is because they hope to get their next great superstar the following year.
This could be frustrating, Redick. After all, it limits the ceiling of the team he is currently coaching. It could also be wasting LeBron James’ final year(s). And it also would come with seeing Austin Reaves’ career year go by.
Taking Accountability
It is important to note that this is just one of a handful of times Redick has called out players or ownership in a post-game presser.
Just a few weeks ago, Redick confessed that some of the members of the team do not even know the playbook. He has also cited trade rumors and general inconsistency.
He even promised, following a December loss, that the next practice would be one of the most difficult. Just for Deandre Ayton to say it was not that at all.
What Must be Done
While there are noticeable holes when it comes to the Lakers’ roster, all sides of the front office, coaching staff, and players have to find a way to do better.
The last thing the Lakers need is a divide between the front office and JJ Redick. And the last thing JJ Redick needs is a divide between him and the players. But public comments about each other can do just that.
Everybody must take accountability both on and off the court. Otherwise, barring this and possible roster moves, the Lakers’ struggles may continue in the future.
