Lakers Dominated on the Road by the Defending Champs
The Lakers traveled to Oklahoma City tonight to face the defending champs. Simply put, they were outplayed the entire matchup, losing 121-92.
Luka and LA could not get anything going against the Thunder’s stifling defense. Facing arguably the league’s best team, this was one of the first matchups of the season where it was evident that the Lakers are missing LeBron James.
Without a third consistent scoring option, the team struggled to generate any offense. On the defensive end, it wasn’t any better. SGA was able to find all of his shooting spots and torched the Lakers’ defense.
Being the blowout it was, the benches were nearly emptied by the beginning of the fourth quarter.
The Lakers forgot their was a game in OKC tonight…

Offensive Woes
LA couldn’t hit the side of a barn tonight, shooting 31-77, just 40% from the field. This may have been just due to having an off shooting night in a tough environment, but OKC’s championship pedigree defense was evident the whole night.
They picked up 14 steals and four blocks, forcing the Lakers into 20 turnovers. They held LA’s star backcourt of Doncic and Reaves to just 32 points combined. If this team wants to make a deep run, they will need others to step up when these two are having a tough game.
Defensive Struggles
On the other end of the court, the Lakers couldn’t stop a nosebleed if they wanted to. OKC consistently attacked the paint and moved the ball. They recorded 28 assists and had seven players with double digits, led by SGA with 30 points in just 29 minutes.
The Thunder shot the ball 11 more times; however, the number was much larger going into the fourth before the stars were pulled. Without a third dependable defender, LA’s D was picked apart by OKC’s deep roster.
Missing LeBron
The Lakers have been a good basketball team even without their superstar, LeBron James. Before tonight, they began the season 8-3 and sat at the 3rd seed in the West. After tonight, it was clear that the team is missing the all-time scoring leader.
James is a versatile defender and provides the team with a consistent scoring punch. With him on the court, it opens up more opportunities for Doncic and Reaves and gives them another playmaker in the halfcourt. LeBron has begun ramping up his efforts to return.
He practiced with the Lakers’ G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, this week. He did not join the team on this current road trip, but he is hopeful to make his season debut when they are back in LA.
Looking Ahead
Los Angeles travels next to New Orleans on Friday to take on the struggling (2-9) Pelicans. Hopefully, they can rebound from this game and get back in the win column.
