Lakers Seek Eighth Straight Win vs Suns

The 15-4 Lakers will once again find themselves on the second half of a back-to-back Monday night as they host the 12-9 Phoenix Suns. This is the first of two meetings between the division foes in the month of December. There could also be a third later on in the NBA Cup.

Here are the Lakers’ keys to extend their win streak to eight games.

Focus on stopping Devin Booker

With Jalen Green sidelined due to injury, Devin Booker is by far the number one option for the Suns. The former Kentucky guard is having another impressive season thus far. He is averaging over 25 points a game to go along with 4.4 rebounds and nearly seven assists.

Booker is turning the ball over at a high rate, though, averaging 3.9 turnovers. That mark is the 5th worst in the league. With the Suns lacking a high-level secondary ball handler or scoring option, the Lakers should throw everything at Booker. This should lead to forcing players like Collin Gillespie, Dillon Brooks, and Grayson Allen to beat them on the perimeter.

Battle on the Glass

The Suns are seeing an impressive stretch from their starting big man, Mark Williams. The Lakers nearly acquired Williams last season before the trade fell apart due to a failed physical. Now, it will be Deandre Ayton squaring off against the big man.

Williams had an impressive 21-point and 16-rebound game against Sacramento last week. He will rest after sitting out the Suns last game against the Nuggets. The Lakers know Williams will have revenge on his mind, so they must contain him.

Limit Turnovers

The Suns rank among the middle of the pack in almost every statistical category except one: steals. The Suns are averaging 10.6 steals per game this season, ranking first in the association. It has helped them to exceed expectations so far this year.

While the Lakers, of course, have three excellent playmakers in LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves, everyone still has to be on high alert. The Lakers can not give the Suns transition opportunities.

Wrap Up

A win tonight would extend the Lakers’ winning streak. It is the second-longest active streak behind OKC. A win would also give them a 16-4 start. This would be their best through 20 games since the championship 2019-2020 squad began the season 17-3.

The Lakers will have two days off following Monday night’s game. They will then begin a three-game road trip.
