Luka Doncic lifts Lakers to win over Nuggets

The Lakers went into Denver Saturday night in a primetime game and made a statement. Los Angeles ended the Nuggets’ nine-game winning streak, which was the longest win streak in the Nikola Jokic era.

The 123-100 win was in large part thanks to a breakout performance from Luka Doncic, among others. Here are the key takeaways from the win.

Luka Doncic ArrivesĀ

After struggling to find a rhythm in his first couple of games as a Laker, Luka Doncic officially introduced himself to Lakers nation. Doncic went off for 32 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. The Slovenian superstar looked like his old self as he diced up the Denver defense all night.

This came off the heels of JJ Redick challenging Doncic, saying he wanted him to have a “blackout episode” and be “the killer.” It is safe to say that the challenge was accepted and completed.

A Team WinĀ

The Lakers had four players score 20 or more points, including Hachimura (21), Reaves (23), James (25), and the aforementioned Doncic (32).

Tonight gave Lakers fans a glimpse into what this new-look offense could look like. With so many ball handlers and an uncanny ability to put pressure on opposing defenses, this four-headed monster could just be getting started.

Heading into the game, many considered the Nuggets to be the hottest team in basketball. This strong team win should give LA momentum moving forward.

Defending Nikola JokicĀ

It goes without saying it is nearly impossible to shut down Nikola Jokic, but the Lakers got as close as you possibly can.

Even though Jokic put up a triple-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists, the reigning MVP shot just 2/7, was a -11, and had six turnovers. Not to mention, he is constantly exploited on the defensive end.

JJ Redick and company threw all sorts of bodies at the Joker, including Hachimura, James, Jaxson Hayes, and Jarred Vanderbilt.

LA lived with the Nuggets role players like Aaron Gordon and Michael Porter Jr putting up shots. The decision paid off as Denver shot just 40% from the field as a team and had 20 turnovers.

The Lakers improve to 34-21 on the season with the win and move into 4th place in the Western Conference. Los Angeles will return to action at home on Tuesday for a date with the Dallas Mavericks. This will mark Doncic’s first game against his former team.
