Luka Doncic’s Offseason: A Leaner, Meaner Star Ready to Elevate

Luka Doncic has long been a lightning rod for criticism in a league where physical conditioning often fuels endless debates. Despite his undeniable talent, the Slovenian superstar’s physique has drawn scrutiny from fans and pundits alike. Accusations of being “out of shape,” whispers about his love for beer and hookah have overshadowed his on-court brilliance.

But this summer, following a blockbuster trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, Doncic has silenced the noise with a dedicated body transformation poised to redefine his career.

The trade to L.A. marked a low point in a challenging season for the 26-year-old. A calf injury sidelined him for all of January, and the Lakers’ early first-round playoff exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves left him motivated like never before.

“So every summer I try my best to work on different things,” he says. “I’m very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better.”

Building “Team Luka”

Doncic’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. In 2023, after the Dallas Mavericks missed the playoffs, he assembled “Team Luka”—a dedicated group of specialists including physiotherapists, trainers, and nutritionists.

Training sessions took place in a quiet Croatian town where Doncic has vacationed since his teens. He shipped weights and equipment to create a makeshift gym, allowing for comprehensive workouts blending strength training, agility drills, and basketball-specific exercises.

Doncic built total-body strength through weights and dabbled in pickleball and padel to engage new muscles while sparing his knees. “At the beginning, it was hard,” he says. “I can’t be without basketball. But when I was a little kid, I played a lot of sports.”

Diet and Recovery: Fueling the Change

Nutrition played a starring role in Doncic’s overhaul. Adopting an intermittent fasting plan to reduce inflammation, he consumed two high-protein meals and one almond milk shake daily—totaling at least 250 grams of protein—while going gluten-free and low-sugar. Meals were timed post-morning workout, emphasizing recovery and muscle building.

The results are visible: a slimmer frame, defined arms, and a jersey that hangs looser. “Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better,” Doncic said, nodding to his reshaped shoulders. He reports feeling more rested, with improved sleep and energy levels: “My sleeping, my body, my everything…I felt more rested.”

What This Means for the Lakers

For the Lakers, acquiring Doncic was a seismic shift. Still, his commitment to peak conditioning could catalyze a championship run. Paired with LeBron James and a revamped roster, a more fit Doncic promises enhanced explosiveness, durability, and leadership. In late August, he’ll test his new form with Slovenia’s EuroBasket qualifiers. Still, the real proving ground is the 2025-26 NBA season.

Drawing inspiration from legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Dirk Nowitzki, Doncic is eyeing longevity. “MJ and Kobe, you know, they really did a lot in their careers,” he says. “They sacrificed a lot.” “Be the best that I can be, take care of myself,” he says. “This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can’t stop.”

As Doncic said, “If I stop now, it was all for nothing.” For Lakers fans, this upgraded version of Luka spells excitement—and a serious threat to the league.
