New Report Reveals Lakers Future Front Office Strategy
After a relatively quiet trade deadline, much of Laker Nation is becoming impatient when it comes to the front office. It feels as though the Lakers are being too patient and conservative. Their lack of moves at the deadline could lead to another wasted season of the LeBron James, Austin Reaves, and Luka Doncic big three.
The good news? A recent report by Dan Woike suggests things will be heating up starting this summer. And it all will be sparked by the new ownership of Mark Walter.
The Dodger Model
In the report, Woike explained that the Lakers will look to make big hires in the front office. They want to make these hires with the mindset of modeling things after the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers, whom Walter also owns, have quickly become known as a franchise willing to spend any amount of money to secure superstars and win championships. While the NBA, unlike MLB, is a salary-cap league, the willingness to spend is still important.
With the current CBA, you have to be willing to spend into the luxury tax and pay it if you want to win. You also need to make sure you are selecting the right stars to pay. Clearly, Mark Walter’s owned teams can do that.
Money to spend
The Lakers are among the few teams this offseason that will have enough money for a max contract. It’s becoming clear that their main target is Giannis Antetokounmpo.
They would have to do it through trade, but it would involve major financial moves and decisions, especially regarding retaining LeBron James or Austin Reaves, who would likely have to be sent to the Bucks in a sign-and-trade to make the deal work.
Making it a reality
For now, though, these plans and promises are just that. Ownership and the front office will have to prove they will be able to fulfill their vision. But if they do? A rival league executive, quoted by Woike, put it best: “It’s going to be scary.”
