The Lakers Perfect Trade Proposal For Andrew Wiggins

The Los Angeles Lakers are still in the trade market for a wing defender, and one name has resurfaced again in rumors—former number one overall pick Andrew Wiggins of the Miami Heat.

He is a clear prototype of the player the team wants around Luka and Lebron. Wiggins is an excellent defender and a solid scorer when needed. He can knock down the occasional three and has enough size to grab rebounds and attack the rim.

The Lakers have had on-and-off discussions with the Heat regarding Wiggins in the past, but it was just recently reported that negotiations have reopened. However, Miami’s rumored asking price is fairly steep. According to multiple reports, they would like a package of Rui Hachimura, Dalton Knecht, and a future first-round pick in a deal for Wiggins.

While this may still be considered an upgrade for the roster, Rob Pelinka likely scoffed at the asking price, especially with the draft pick included.

The Best Trade for Andrew Wiggins

Miami Heat receive: Rui Hachimura, Maxi Kleber, 2030 first-round pick swap

Los Angeles Lakers receive: Andrew Wiggins

Los Angeles would love to hold on to Dalton Knecht, as he’s young and has potential to crack the rotation. Unfortunately, after his Summer League performance, his stock has never been lower. Kleber is expendable with two bigs on the roster, and Wiggins is a better fit for the Lakers over Hachimura.

Rui has provided the Lakers with a consistent scoring punch, but Wiggins is a better perimeter defender and could provide at least 80% of Hachimura’s offensive production. After losing Dorian Finney-Smith this offseason to the Houston Rockets, LA desperately needs more perimeter protection.

Wiggins has provided that for most of his career. He most notably played an extremely vital part in the Warriors’ 2022 championship run. Wiggins was arguably the MVP of their Finals series against the Boston Celtics for his lockdown defense and consistent scoring. He hasn’t played at the same caliber since then, but is still capable of being a high-impact starter.

Another bonus is that Wiggin’s contract expires after two seasons in 2027. This is rumored to be the Lakers’ timeline to pursue players like Giannis Antetokounmpo or Nikola Jokic.

Miami may not be willing to bring its price down, but this should at least be the Lakers’ initial offer.
