Cameron Carr: The Steal of the Draft

The Los Angeles Lakers traded up a spot in the first round of the NBA draft to select Cameron Carr with the 24th overall pick. Carr is a 6’4 wing who was expected to be off the board by the time the Lakers were on the clock. But somehow, he fell all the way to the LakeShow.

Carr’s fall, however, could prove to be a regret for those who passed on him. He has legitimate potential to be the steal of the entire draft. There are plenty of reasons why, too.

Instant Impact

Carr is a player who will be ready to make an impact in LA on day 1. His nearly 7’1 wingspan and 42.5-inch vertical are already impressive. But add it on to his 10.46-second lane agility time at the combine, and he is truly a freak of nature.

Carr will be able to put his athleticism and his 38% 3-point shooting on 6 attempts per game on display. He will have a legitimate shot at cracking the Lakers’ rotation in year 1.

Always Improving

What is perhaps most impressive about Carr is how he improved every step of the way throughout his college career. After a disappointing start at Tennessee, hindered by injury, he transferred to Baylor.

For the Bears, he became a 19 PPG scorer, more than quadrupling what he posted at Tennessee. His rebounding also saw a significant jump. Yet even with increased volume, he remained efficient, shooting over 50% from the field.

Room to Grow

For Carr to truly become the gem of the draft and a key piece for the Lakers, there are still some things to improve.

For one, Carr needs to find his mid-range game. He is an excellent finisher and can knock down the 3. But he lacks the in-between game needed in big-time moments like the playoffs.

Secondly, Carr needs to develop his defensive IQ. His athleticism allows him to record highlight blocks and steals. But his defense, from both a fundamental and a consistency perspective, needs improvement. However, he undoubtedly has the tools to accomplish this.

The Magic Car(r)pet Ride Begins + Player Comparison

Overall, Cameron Carr checks all the boxes needed as a wing to play next to Luka Doncic. His current form suggests he can contribute at the NBA level.

As for his future, fine-tuning just a couple of aspects of his game could turn him into a legitimate piece for a championship-caliber team. Now, the fact that the Lakers were able to get all of this at pick number 24 in the draft? That is certainly something to be happy about.
