JJ Redick reveals long-term plans as Lakers coach
JJ Redick is now only eight games away from completing his first regular season as head coach of the Lakers, and in his time thus far, he’s been nothing short of spectacular.
Redick has dealt with having his early season adjustment period compared to Darvin Ham’s failures, having his home and neighborhoods set ablaze in devastating fires, and dealing with a roster overhaul that would cripple most first-year head coaches.
Through it all, Redick has remained steadfast, providing the team with a rock to anchor to all season long. Throughout the season, JJ has consistently been authentically and unapologetically himself.
Whether it be his strength through adversity, his offensive system flourishing in the modern NBA, or his realness and entertainment value in interviews, Lakers fans have fallen in love.
Just yesterday, I texted some colleagues, ironically saying, “Man, I hope that the team signs Redick to a 20-year deal.” Thanks to an interview with Dan Woike, it was refreshing to find out that Redick feels the same way.
JJ Redick returned to the Palisades to see the devastation from the fires and to talk about his $50 million plan to help the rebuild – starting with the rec center near his home and sprawling across the city, to make those communal spaces whole again. https://t.co/FtiTdJGYox pic.twitter.com/UncxRMNZpb

The JJ Redick Dynasty?
Toward the end of the video, Redick shared his hopes for the remainder of his Lakers tenure. Redick shared, “We’re in it for the long haul – I would love to be the Lakers coach for the next 15 to 20 years – If I’m not the Lakers coach…I’m in it for the long haul in LA. Like this for me is like, it’s important to me.”
With the way his first season has gone, I would assume that most Angelinos and fans across the world would love to make that a reality. Between Redick, Doncic, Reaves, and whoever else makes their way to LA, the Lakers would be set for the next 15-20 years of sustained success.
Redick isn’t just concerned with sustained basketball success. He has his eyes set on sustained community success. While standing in the rubble of his own home, fighting through emotions, Redick has this to say.
“The personal loss is one thing, and that’s hard, but it’s the loss of an entire community – that’s the hardest part to process.”
The Lakers and Coach Redick hosted a special basketball clinic for kids impacted by the LA fires.

Redick went on to share that he has already been in contact with the Mayor of Los Angeles, creating an urgency to restore these communities and provide “some level of optimism and hope.”
Whether it’s on the court or off the court, Redick has exemplified the traits of not only a great coach but a great human as well. If Los Angeles and the Lakers get to claim JJ for the next 15-20 years, we will all be better for it.
