Lakers defeat Knicks in overtime thriller

The Lakers extended their season-high winning streak to 8 games Thursday night as they took down the New York Knicks 113-109 in overtime. The game was physical, chaotic, and a bit ugly at times, but the Lakers got it done. Here are the biggest takeaways from the win.

Overcoming Poor Shooting

Despite facing the worst 3-point shooting defense in the league, the Lakers shot just 33% from 3, including just 18% from deep in the first half.

More importantly, though, the Lakers fought through it. Los Angeles got going when it mattered in the 4th quarter and OT and showed they can win in more ways than one.

Defense Continues to Shine

By far, the biggest reason for this win streak has been LA’s defense, which continued against the Knicks. The Lakers forced New York to just 39% from the field and 23% from three.

The Knicks, who came in as the NBA’s 5th best-scoring offense, put up just 99 points in regulation and 109 points for the game. New York is also one of the best clutch-time teams in the league, but they were held to just 15 points in the 4th quarter during the Lakers’ comeback.

Luka and LeBron Close it Out

The Lakers two superstars combined for 63 points, with Luka Doncic going for 32 and LeBron James going for 31. The two engineered the offense down the stretch, creating open looks for themselves and others.

One of those “others” was Gabe Vincent, who made three 4th quarter threes. Vincent’s improved ability to contribute offensively has immensely helped the Lakers, in addition to his impressive defense.

Up Next

The win moves the Lakers to 40-21 as they continue to hold down the two-seed position in the Western Conference. For the Knicks, they drop to 40-22 and will have to hope for good news regarding Jalen Brunson, who exited in the final minute with what looked like a severe ankle injury.

The Lakers will have another big test against an Eastern Conference contender when they take on the rival Boston Celtics on Saturday at 5:30 PM on ABC.
