Luka Doncic vs Victor Wembanyama: Everything You Need to Know

Tonight, Luka Doncic and your Los Angeles Lakers (6-2) return to Crypto.com Arena to take on Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs (5-1). This is set to be one of the best games of this newly budding NBA season.

Not only are we looking at the current number two and three seeds in the Western Conference, but we’re also looking at likely the two top MVP front-runners at the moment. With Luka Doncic and Victor Wembanyama sharing the court, sparks are set to fly.

This will be their first meeting since Luka became a Laker, and the bright lights of Hollywood will certainly illuminate this battle of titans. Here is everything you’ll need to know ahead of tonight’s matchup.

Doncic vs Wembanyama

As previously mentioned, this will be the first battle between two of the best young players the game has to offer since last season’s blockbuster trade. While the two play different positions and drastically different play styles, all eyes will be on them.

Especially considering some of the injuries tonight.

The Lakers are still without LeBron James, as they’ve been all season. Austin Reaves is also going to be held out for the second straight game due to groin soreness. On the Spurs side, they’re set to be without De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Luke Kornet.

This sets the stage for a true battle between both clubs’ best talents. Doncic is averaging 41.3 PPG, 11.5 RPG, and 8.3 APG on 54% from the field. Wembanyama is averaging 26.7 PPG, 13.7 RPG, and 4.7 BPG on 53% from the field. Tonight is going to be special.

Slowing Down Wembanyama

This season, Victor Wembanyama has been as close to an unstoppable force as it gets. Stepback four-point-plays, reverse alley oops, and blocking everything in sight have been right in his wheelhouse. Looks like training with Shaolin monks, Kevin Garnett, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Jamal Crawford this offseason is paying dividends.

The other night, however, the Phoenix Suns made him look pedestrian for the first time all season. They were able to hold him to just nine points, nine rebounds, and two assists while shooting 4/14. How did they do it?

Phoenix deployed multiple defenders, including ex-Laker Jordan Goodwin, to make sure every time he touched the ball, it was as far from the basket as possible. With the depth the Lakers have in strong pests like Jarred Vanderbilt, Marcus Smart, Jake LaRavia, and Rui Hachimura, hopefully, they can continue to get under Wembanyama’s skin.
