Luka Dončić’s Defense is Much Better Than You Think
Webster’s Dictionary defines a cone as a solid bounded by a circular or other closed plane base and the surface formed by line segments joining every point of the boundary of the base to a common vertex. A basketball fan may define it as Luka Dončić on defense.
Dončić has been wowing fans for the majority of his life with his outlandish offensive gifts. Nonetheless, one portion of his game that’s brought quite a bit of criticism is his defense.
When talking about Dončić, those are often the two things mentioned. His offensive talent is undeniable, but his defensive shortcomings, however, are never far behind in the discussion. What if I told you that he’s not only not a poor defender, but might just be a high-caliber defender?
You probably wouldn’t believe me. It’s a good thing I came with numbers.
The Misconception of Luka’s Defense
Until recently, few would look at Luka Dončić and think he’s the pinnacle of health and wellness. It’s, fortunately for Lakers fans, one of the foolish reasons Dallas chose to part ways with him.
Over the course of his career, he’s typically carried a bit more weight than he probably should, and that’s influenced his playstyle.
Dončić has always had the uncanny ability to accelerate and decelerate, and has relied more on his skill, strength, and insane basketball IQ to get to his spots rather than elite athleticism.
That lack of foot speed on the other end of the court has cost him. It wouldn’t be difficult to find a lowlights reel of Dončić getting blown past on defense. Basing conversations on that alone is frankly disengenuous, as you could find clips of almost every NBA player being blown past on defense.
If you take a good look at the numbers, though, you’ll come to find that Luka is far from a bad defender.
Here are the Facts About Luka
Despite his lack of certain elite physical gifts like foot speed, quickness, and overall agility, at a baseline, he does have a solid frame to defend. Luka’s size and strength allow him to guard anywhere from the one to the four spot defensively, which is incredibly effective in not being punished by mismatches.
You mix his IQ into the equation, and this is where he starts to shine. Last season, Dončić finished 8th in the NBA in steals off poor passes among the likes of players like Kawhi Leonard, Mikal Bridges, Dyson Daniels, and Cason Wallace. In overall steals, Dončić averaged 1.6 steals last season, which was 15th in the league.

Those numbers speak to him off-ball, capitalizing on offensive mistakes. You’d think that with so much footage of him being blown past, surely he’s not a good isolation defender. That is simply false.
Last season, Dončić was one of the most heavily targeted defenders in isolation. His 0.84 PPP allowed in 109 iso’s last season, however, was just below Amen Thompson and better than players like Jaden McDaniels and OG Anunoby.
Those three players are widely regarded as some of the league’s best defenders, by the way. One of whom was just extended to a 5-year $208M contract for their defensive gifts.
Luka’s ‘hustle’ metrics are also surprising if you go off the general consensus. Last season, Luka ranked 6th in the league in charges drawn and was great in contests as well. According to NBA RAPM, Dončić ranked in the 95th percentile in shots contested per 100 possessions. He also ranked in the 87th percentile in shots contested at the rim.
Say what you will about Luka Dončić defensively, but numbers do not lie.
What’s Next for Dončić?
If you haven’t seen Dončić recently, he’s the NBA’s offseason darling, with pictures surfacing of his transformation. If Luka is now in arguably the best shape of his NBA career, will we see even further improvement?

The team went out and got him even more pieces to help defensively, from guards to wings to Walker Kessler. If Luka has even less on his plate, are we about to get his best defensive season yet?
